  • Why does assessment include autism + ADHD?

Ebonnie conducts combined assessments where both autism and ADHD are assessed as they frequently co-occur.

Where someone’s autistic traits have remained unidentified after their ADHD is recognised, it is not uncommon for these individuals to experience their autistic traits more intensely where their ADHD medication improves their executive functioning. This is because ADHD can and does mask autistic traits, and vice versa. It can be very helpful to be aware of this possibility in advance, so that you can plan for and understand what is going on.

How much does an Autism + ADHD assessment cost?

The fee for a combined formal assessment for adults is:

    • with brief diagnostic letter - $1650; or

    • comprehensive diagnostic report - $2500

What does this assessment package include?

    • initial intake interview (45-60 minutes)

    • formal diagnostic interview using the MIGDAS and DIVA (up to 3 hours)

    • questionnaires and testing measures such as BRIEF-A2, SPM-2, SRS

    • analysis and interpretation of test results and interview data

    • feedback session where results are explained and recommendations provided (30-45 minutes)

    • brief letter or comprehensive diagnostic report

    NDIS Requirements

The standard assessment package is suitable for adults seeking a formal assessment of neurodivergence to better understand their neurotype and needs, and to inform therapy and treatment planning. If the assessment indicates that one or both diagnostic criteria according to the DSM-5-TR has been met then the relevant diagnosis will be made.

This is however only part of what is required to satisfy requirements of the NDIS. For NDIS-related assessments, additional testing and documentation is necessary.

    Additional fees apply.

What if I already have an ADHD diagnosis?

If you have already received an ADHD diagnosis Ebonnie can conduct an assessment just for autism.

The fee for a formal autism assessment for adults is:

    • with brief diagnostic letter - $1200; or

    • comprehensive diagnostic report - $1800

What if I already have an Autism diagnosis?

Despite the fact that a Clinical Psychologist can appropriately assess ADHD against diagnostic criteria, to access ADHD medication you must be assessed by a medical doctor. Unfortunately a psychologist’s assessment report will not be accepted as evidence.

For this reason Ebonnie suggests that people seeking only an ADHD assessment consult with a psychiatrist, general practitioner (some states), or paediatrician (up to age 25 years).

What is the cost if I previously went through screening?

If you completed screening with Ebonnie then the cost of assessment will be adjusted accordingly (as you will have already completed parts of the assessment process).

  • Ebonnie typically offers screening for autism and ADHD within psychological therapy, either at the start of treatment or as part of ongoing assessment and treatment planning.

If you will be seeing Ebonnie for mental health treatment and believe you may be autistic or have ADHD, you are encouraged to share this with your referring GP or directly with Ebonnie.

For people who would like to explore their belief that they are autistic and/or have ADHD and are not seeking mental health treatment Ebonnie offers appointments that focus solely on neurodivergence screening —

    What is screening?
Screening aims to identify symptoms and traits a person may experience via completing a series of questionnaires and follow-up interview(s).

The screening questionnaires that Ebonnie uses are free and publicly available. The benefit of participating in a screening process with a professional is in being able to understand how those questionnaires differ and what they each aim to identify, discuss your given responses to those questionnaires and explore complexity and nuance that questionnaires alone are unable to capture.

Screening is not the same as assessment and diagnosis.
Screening is not adequate evidence when applying for funding support (e.g., NDIS).

A formal assessment is more comprehensive than screening. It typically involves more intensive standardised assessment tools, gathering additional information from others (e.g., parents, partners), and provision of a written report at the end.

Who might screening be suitable for?

    Screening can help:

    • individuals to better understand aspects about themselves that may have gone unrecognised into adulthood

    • individuals who are deciding whether or not to participate in a full assessment process

    • with treatment planning

What is the cost of a formal assessment after completing screening?

If you completed screening with Ebonnie then the cost of assessment will be adjusted accordingly (as you will have already completed parts of the assessment process).
